Sweetgum (Liquidambar orientalis) is a sycamore-like tree that can reach a height of 20 meters, growing only in the south western region of Turkey in the world. Sweetgum oil, on the other hand, is a balm obtained from the sweetgum, which has been used since the earliest Mediterranean civilizations due to its beautiful smell and therapeutic properties. Scratches are made on tree trunks in spring to obtain sweetgum oil. Balm and shells accumulated on the trunk as of July are scraped with special blades. After boiling these balms and shells with hot water, Sweetgum Oil is obtained by squeezing them in special presses. In the composition of Sweetgum Oil, there is cinnamic acid (a substance that gives the smell of cinnamon), essential oil and resin, which makes it smell pleasant.

Sweetgum oil has been used since the time of Hippocrates, and is also a frequent source of healing in the prescriptions of ancient physicians. The appearance of amphorae filled with sweetgum oil from sunken Phoenician ships shows that sweetgum oil has an important place in the Mediterranean trade. It is said that the ancient Egyptian queen Cleopatra used sweetgum oil as a love potion and perfume. The ancient Egyptians are also known to have used this balm during embalming operations.

Currently, Sweetgum Oil has an important place, especially in the soap and perfumery industry.  It’s a good antiseptic. It has softening, relaxing, inflammatory and wound healing effects on the skin. It also cleanses and removes sweat odours.
